The Best Way to Fly

Air Travel for Pets

When relocating abroad many people wish to bring their much loved pets with them. Your pet can be transported by air from a number of airports in the UK to a wide range of countries and destinations. A large number of airlines offer pet transportation services, the cost of which will vary according to the type of animal, the size of your pet and the arrival destination.

When transporting pets abroad it is advisable to book a direct flight if you can, to ensure the trip is as stress free and short as possible. Minimising the amount of time your pet is in transit will cut down on unnecessary discomfort. Depending on the type of animal your pet may be able to travel with you in the cabin, although in the majority of cases pets will be required to travel in the cargo hold.

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is in place to allow owners to transport their cats and dogs to and from the UK between certain countries in the EU without quarantining your pet. This is only possible if certain rules and regulations are met, in order to keep the United Kingdom free from certain diseases including rabies. For further information on PETS regulations go to the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs website.

Your pet will need an up to date valid pet passport before he or she will be allowed to travel. In order to obtain a pet passport your animal will need to be microchipped and a rabies vaccination will be administered. After 21-30 days a blood test will be taken to ensure your pet has immunity against rabies. If a pet passport is not obtained your pet will be required to spend six months in quarantine at your expense.

Your pet will be required to travel in an IATA (International Air Transport Association) approved pet travel container for their own safety and comfort. It is not advisable to sedate your pet for the journey unless instructed to by your veterinarian. Most airlines will not transport an animal that has been sedated for their own safety as medication can affect animals differently at high altitudes.
